Construction Volunteer Information
Do I need construction experience?
All of our projects are built primarily with inexperienced volunteers who have a willingness to learn. Construction supervisors will teach you what you need to do.
What happens at a Habitat construction site?
A Habitat staff construction supervisor or Habitat Host will greet you for sign in and will give you an orientation.
Everyone will be shown what tasks need to be accomplished. The work will be broken down into small, manageable tasks. You will never be asked to do something you are not comfortable with such as getting on the roof or operating power tools.
Is there an age requirement?
All volunteers must be at least 16 years old. No one under the age of 16 is allowed on site. 16-17 yr. olds are not
allowed to be on the roof or to use power tools and must have a parental waiver and medical release signed. These forms are available on the website. Please note that even if accompanied by a parent, children under 16 are not permitted on our construction sites.
When can I volunteer on a construction site?
Build days are typically Wednesdays and Saturdays each week.
What is the time commitment asked of volunteers?
All volunteers are asked to commit to working a full day 8 AM-3:30 PM Wednesdays and Saturdays. Volunteers must be on site promptly at the start of the build day for the safety orientation or you will not be permitted to stay.
What should we wear?
The most important item to wear is sturdy closed-toe, closed-heel shoes. Hiking shoes, leather boots, or at least a solid pair of athletic shoes are a must. During the winter months please be sure to dress warm. Please bring work gloves.
How do I sign up to volunteer?
Go to this page on our website to sign up as a Volunteer.
Can I bring a friend or a group with me?
All volunteers must sign up in advance to ensure there is enough supervision, tools and work space. Please contact the Volunteer Dept. if you’d like to schedule an additional volunteer day.
What should we bring?
You need to bring a sack lunch, a water bottle and sunscreen. It is very helpful if you can also bring work gloves and a pencil. All volunteers must wear hard hats and safety glasses which will be provided for your use on your volunteer day. However, if you would like to bring your own, this would be greatly appreciated. If you bring your own hard hat make sure that it is OSHA approved. Please do not bring your own power tools.
Are there other ways to help Habitat?
Yes! We also have volunteers who serve on committees, on special projects or help in the office. You can
also help by making a monetary contribution. Our largest source of income comes from local individual donations.
Can court-ordered community service be done?
Yes. Please contact our Executive Director for more information.
